For The People By The People

Here is a super rare set recorded live in San Francisco in early 1997 at one of Owen Maigret"s By The People parties. The vibe is very deep and then goes into dubbed out disco territory midway through, then back to house. Not much else to say here except that the music speaks for itself. This is the first time that this mix has ever seen the light of day. Special thanks to Anthony Silva for helping bring this mix to the Quarkive. In fact I wouldn't have known this mix even existed if it weren't for him. Hope you enjoy! Mark E Quark in San Francisco on January 25th 1997 by Mark E Quark

Run For The Border!

MOONSHAKE went international this month by being invited to bring our biweekly party to El EuroBar in Ensenada, Mexico.  So we packed up our records and crew and headed south of the border for what would turn out to be an incredible night of friends, music, & mischief. Such a great vibe with a crowd that seemed to be enthusiastic and hungry for the music that we love. Not a bad situation at all. Here's my full set from that night.

Mark E Quark - Food, 1992

Here it is, my most requested tape ever! This was released not too long after I played the first & now legendary Narnia party. Funny background story - I was never officially booked to play the first Narnia party but I was told I could play if Doc Martin was a no show. Guess what? Doc never showed up. Thanks Doc! I went on after Michael Cook right at sunrise and I played much of the music that is featured on this tape. From that point I would be booked as the "sunrise dj" for many years to come. Remastered from a first generation copy & uploaded for your listening pleasure. Cover design & layout by Jonathan Wells of Statik & myself.

Mark E Quark - Happy Magick, 1994

This is one of my personal favorites from the Quark-ive. I recorded this sometime in 1994 and it is chock full of deep moody and dubby house cuts that I was playing pretty heavily at that time. This one was aimed purely at the mind more than the feet. Enjoy!

Mark E Quark - Sorted, 1992

This promotional dj mix was originally recorded in the Fall of 1992. Cover design was a collaborative effort between Jonathan Wells of Statik & myself. I grabbed the images from a DJ magazine article on DJ CHOCI/DIY parties in Nottingham and I thought they captured the mood that I was trying to create with the music perfectly. Just check out the girls 'feelin' it' and you'll see what I mean. Jonathan then did the layout and design in Quarkxpress. We definitely had a lot of fun putting this one together. This mix tape was mastered from a 1st generation copy donated by Kelli & Craig Moreno.

Curious Josh

My buddy Josh McClintock's "Acid Junky Vol 1" was just added to the wonderful SIMFONIK site. A very nice slice of musical history right here. Old school headz please check it - you won't regret it!

Mark E Quark - Bassix, 1994

This is my Bassix cassette mix from way back in 1994 for your listening & download pleasure. This was my obligatory 'breakbeat house' mix and has early material from Le Funk Mob, Chemical Brothers (when they were still known as the Dust Brothers), plus DJ Spun's first record, Central Fire, which is all over this mix. In fact, side 2 is completely structured around this record! I not only thought it was the greatest record ever made at the time, but it was an excellent mixing tool that I could pretty much layer with anything and mix for ages and that I did. :-) I lived for records like this!

At the same time I was putting this 'tape" together, 'trip hop' and 'ambient dub' were brand new genres coming up that were also explored in this mix. I also incorporated some of my favorite house records at the time like David Morales & The Bad Yard Club "Gimme Luv" & Coup d'Etat - that mysterious house white label sampling Janis Joplin's "Ball & Chain".

Special thanks to Craig & Kelli Moreno for lending me the tape for this project! These mixes are both downloadable and were encoded at 320 kbps. I hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

Mark E Quark - Live @ Etch & Sketch, Nov 1992

This set was recorded live at an underground weekly after-show called Etch A Sketch (San Diego's answer to LA's Sketch Pad) which started sometime in late 92 by Scott Leitzke & James Heth. The weekly was held in a vacant basement of a building in the Gaslamp area of downtown San Diego. Despite the silly name and the fact it started in the wee hours of the morning, this was a very fun, but short lived night which offered music and a "free breakfast cereal bar" which was a pretty unique idea at the time. The djs on this particular night, if my memory serves me correctly, were DJ Xstatic aka Daeman, Joey Jimenez & myself. This was the era I was constantly being billed as the "sunrise" dj and you can hear why on this mix. Lots of deep / early morning house classics here plus a few other surprises. This mix has never seen the light of day until now. I hope you get a kick out of hearing this mix which is just a few months past 19 years in age. A big thanks goes to Nathalie Schroeder for lending me her copy of this cassette tape since I had lost mine years ago in a move.
